WA

WA is a table lamp crafted from reused train parts of the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line 8500 series, which retired in January 2023. Around 1,400 resin ring components, originally used as train strap handles, were collected and turned into a limited edition of 150 lightings. The project aimed to give a second life to retired train parts and promote sustainability through design.

WAは2023年1月に定期運行を終了した東急田園都市線8500系の車両部品を再利用したテーブルランプです。本商品は、ロンドンを拠点に活動するデザインスタジオ「Akasaki & Vanhuyse」のデザインによって生み出されたものであり、長年使用された吊り輪の経年変化をデザインの一部として取り入れ、田園都市線を運行していた8500系の記憶を照らすオリジナルプロダクトです。

Akasaki & Vanhuyse is a multidisciplinary design studio based in London. Co-founded in 2022 by Japanese designer / architect Kenta Akasaki and French industrial designer Astrid Vanhuyse. Blending both perspectives, they collaborate on projects including product, tech, lighting, furniture and research. Their approach is purpose-driven and focuses on creating useful, considered and long-lasting solutions.

Design Concept

Inspired by the white colour and the ring form of the strap handles, the table lamp was designed as a functional and long-lasting statement piece.
The lampshade is formed by stacking 9 reused straps with small gaps between them to gently filter the light. The white rings were sandblasted to remove their glossy coating, giving them a softer matte finish. As part of the design, the history of the reused parts is celebrated, embracing surface imperfections from years of use, like scratches and dents. These marks create a crackle-glaze effect that invites the users to connect with the material’s story. The mirrored metal legs hold the rings together with custom bolts. They are fully polished to harmonise the assembly and to add value and quality to the upcycled design. Their curved shape references the soft part wrapping the original train straps.
WA table lamp can be used both in offices and in homes. The compact size makes it versatile to use in diverse settings on tables, bedside, shelves, desks… serving both a functional and decorative role. A transparent power cord ensures minimal visual disruption within the interior.

吊り輪の白色とリング形状をインスピレーションに機能的で長く愛用できることをテーマにデザインしました。ランプシェードは再利用された9個の吊り輪を小さな隙間を空けて重ねることで形成し柔らかな明かりが周囲に漏れるように設計しています。吊り輪はサンドブラスト加工で光沢のあるコーティングを落とし柔らかなマット仕上げとし、再利用素材の歴史を称え、長年使い込まれた吊り輪の傷やへこみは隠さず素材の個性としてデザインに取り入れています。これらの痕跡は陶器の貫入のような効果を生み出し、素材のストーリーを伝えることに貢献しています。鏡面仕上げの金属製の脚部パーツは特注ボルトを用いて吊り輪を固定しており、鏡面仕上げは再利用素材と全体の調和をし、アップサイクルデザインに価値とクオリティを付加しています。曲線的な形状はかつて吊り輪を留めていたベルト部品を彷彿とさせます。WAはオフィスなどのほか、個人利用による住環境での使用も想定しており、コンパクトなサイズ感により卓上・ベッドサイド・棚上など様々な場所で機能面でも装飾面でも活躍できるようにデザインしました。電源コードとスイッチは透明にすることで様々なインテリアに調和するようにしています。

Material Selection

The available train parts were evaluated to decide which one to reuse. The hanging straps that passengers hold onto were selected for their pure and familiar circular form, making them ideal to use as a design component. Made from resin, they are less commonly recycled than metal parts. Since a large number were available, we could produce more units, making the project viable. After collecting the straps from Tokyu Corporation’s retired train carriages, the ring parts were separated for upcycling. Each ring was individually assessed and cleaned.

使用可能な車両部品候補から吊り輪を再利用する素材に採用した。一見で吊り輪であるとわかりやすいリング形状は、デザインに落とし込む際に活かしやすい特徴であるということ。吊り輪は樹脂製で金属部品と比べるとリサイクル率が低い課題があるということ。回収可能数が豊富であり生産数を確保できることから生産単価を抑えられること。これらの理由により吊り輪を再利用素材として採用した。回収した吊り輪部品は表面を洗浄した後にサンドブラスト加工をかけた。
